Flight Gear

Rant

I like flightsims (I want to fly the real thingy sometime in my life). My first flight sim was MS flight sim 3 (run on an 8086 pc, CGA graphics). Then I played a couple of share ware sims from the EGA times. This was followed by Strike Commander. Then came lots of flight sims in combat games (Novalogic flight sim games, MSCFS) and general flying (M$FS, X-Plane, Flightgear). Settled for FlightGear as I get to mess with the source code.

The first time I compiled Flightgear was sometime in 2000 A.D. on a Pentium 166/24MB/No 3D acceleration (I can imagine you laughing). I wanted it badly. After around 3 hours of compiling ld segfault-ed trying to link the program. When finally I got the executable a launch of it crashed something (X server ?; don't remember that). First time I saw it was on a cygwin box (late 2001; spent all afternoon, flying).

Stuff

I used to play with the program a couple of years ago.

A little item in the scenery

My old office

The IBM office I used to work at around 6 months ago. Its pretty close to the VOBG runway (09 - end). Here is my first attempt, Looks rather shabby but I'll fix them. I am yet to get a grip on the texturing art.

A Screen shot (Oh the PUB is in the background)
Another one (Look at the eatery).

I pulled it out, if you are thinking about where the plane went after I took the second screen shot.

The Utility building

A.K.A PUB in Bangalore

Untar the archive publdg.tgz into the scenery tile directory e070n10/e077n12/ (of course you should download the e070n10 scenery and append the first line of the publdg.stg file to 4217276.stg file in the same directory. The Bangalore airport (VOBG) spec found in the SouthInd.apt file

A Screen shot
One at dusk
Bummer! Cant get link to an image made of an image

Bangalore based flightgear enthusiasts might appreciate it.

Old Code

South Indian Airports

A small list of airports in South India I tried to build from DAFIF data is here.

DAFIF-T to .apt file.

Perl script which uses DAFIF-(tab delimited) data to make airport files for flightgear.

Miscellany

  1. Setting FGFS log level from environment variables (used for fgfs v0.8)
  2. XSL stylesheet for keyboard.xml (kinda auto-keyboard reference). Updated 12-03-05 for getting it working with new w3c changes.
